Raptors at Symonds Yat

In summer, the skies over Symonds Yat are alive with birds of prey. Join local raptor expert Steve Watson as he helps us spot up to seven species as they search for food for their young. Peregrines, Goshawks, Buzzards, Red Kites, Hobbys, Kestrels and Sparrowhawks have all been spotted against the magnificent backdrop of Symonds Yat, which has been designated a Scheduled Ancient Monument.

Steve, author of the highly acclaimed book The Peregrine Falcon, says, “This is probably the best viewpoint in the UK, scenically and for observing raptors.”

Raptors don’t fly when it’s raining, so we have a back-up date of Saturday 27 July should the weather be wet.

If you book onto this event, you’ll be able to buy Steve’s book for the reduced price of £35 on the day; usual RRP is £50.

In 2011, local archaeologist Neil Baker started an in-depth exploration called the Heavens Archaeological Research Project (HARP), which has been delving into the archaeology of this lovely area of Stroud.

Join Neil for a guided walk as he reveals the Heavens’ hidden history of weavers, millers and clothiers; you’ll never see things in the same way once you know about the homes and mills that once dotted this ancient landscape.

The walk will take 2.5 to 3 hours and the route is hilly, uneven and muddy in places, so stout footwear and a basic level of fitness are required.

Dogs are allowed but must be kept on a lead.

Willow Tunnel Care Day - CANCELLED

CANCELLED

Due to the forecasted strong winds and heavy rain we have had to unfortunately cancel this event.

Last year a team of ace community volunteers of all ages helped us to plant some great willow tunnels and dens in the play area at Stratford Park.

Whilst the wet summer might have been a bit disappointing for us, it was great for our willow, and it has gone wild! As such, it needs a little attention to get it back into shape for another season’s play.

We would love it if you could join Stroud Valleys Project and willow weaver Norah Kennedy to help get our willow tunnels and dens ready for the children to play in again.

Along the way, you can also learn a little bit about the benefits of trees and planting for wildlife in your own green space.

No need to book, or to commit to a particular length of time – we will be glad of any helping hands you can offer us. Just join us at the top of the play area at Stratford Park! What3Words: ///barefoot.clubbing.humble

It is likely to be a bit muddy at the park, so make sure to wear stout footwear and if you have them, please bring along some work gloves.

We can’t wait to see you there!

This community event is part of our Garden Guardians project, which is supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
